Application to Retrieve Location Maps & Optimized Routes from GIS Data

Title: Application to Retrieve Location Maps & Optimized Routes from GIS Data
Authors: Vijayakumar, T.
Abstract: “One picture is worth more than ten thousand words”
In the modern world where people expect any required information to be retrieved fast and accurate, getting geographical data relating to the people movement or a specific location details has become very essential and more interesting subject of today’s IT world. Early days where you had only the conventional maps, to find your favorite location or to plan out a particular travel route you will have to spend a quite lot of time on tracing manually on the map.

But with the introduction of the digital maps and the rapid growth of the related technologies, opportunities for the IT people to provide various solutions like planning a route, finding a specific location or live travel guidance have grown up immensely. Today there are so many products and free services available for us to enjoy the benefits of digital mapping. With the advent of satellite based GPS positions and geocoding all the landmarks, has resulted the GIS based information systems more convenient and efficient systems for the people to carry out their day to day work.

Even though, there are many sources available to us to get the specific GIS data, we always prefer to have our own information system which we can have the authority to do what we wanted to do. One can argue why existing systems like Google map can’t be used which has more powerful and variety of features. We did a study on the existing systems and the information available in those services and found out the following reasons to justify our stand.
-	What if they start to charge for the services? Already some are charging for enterprise level solutions.
-	Data available only for specific areas and other areas which are more beneficial for us like tourist attractions are yet to be digitize.
-	Sudden changes on the roads, travel restriction on specific time or introduction of uniflow systems which will not be updated immediately in other systems.

Board of Investments of Sri Lanka: Attendance Recording System

Title: Board of Investments of Sri Lanka: Attendance Recording System
Authors: Ekanayake, A.E.S.
Abstract: This Final Report was generated by Ms. A.E.S. Ekanayake of the M. Sc. in Information Technology batch-2, which describes the Attendance Recording System project undertaken for the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka.
Entire process is divided as five modules or sub processes as Data Entry Module, File Maintenance Module, Inquiry Module, Overtime Calculation Module and Report Generation Module.
Attendance Recording System takes in the employee time in and time out data to calculate the daily attendance records. The new system enhances the existing functionalities of the Attendance Recording System and adds more capabilities The recorded attendance details directly affect the employee pay and incentives. Visual Basic 6 is used as the front end tool and SQL Server 2000 as the back end database. In addition to these the Crystal Report 8 is used to give the reporting aspect of the system more flexibility and dynamic query ability. Thus the developed system is more technologically advanced, efficient, and compatible with other systems already developed and deployed in the BOI as well as being more user-friendly.
As special features, it focuses on special adjustments the employees can make in their attendance records. Moreover, the short leave is automatically calculated except for the short leave taken during the lunch break, which can be entered in to the system manually by using the interface provided. Furthermore, special excuse dates for which all the employees are excused for late arrival regardless of their categories are taken into consideration. In addition to these the Breast Feeding Mothers approved daily late or early leave of one hour is automatically updated for six months. The system focuses on file maintenance of the related database. One of the most important characteristic is the reporting part of the system. This adds value to the system as the user can dynamically query to retrieve a report in predefined formats.
All the project goals, which were set, were achieved in terms of Data Entry, File Maintenance, Inquiry, Overtime Calculation and Report Generation. Thus, adding value, efficiency and effectiveness, by streamlining the Attendance Process through this project.

Web Based Service Management System for Sri Lanka Telecom

Title: Web Based Service Management System for Sri Lanka Telecom
Authors: Priyadharsena, W.P.K.
Abstract: This document sets out the final project report for web based service management system for Sri Lanka Telecom Limited. Sri Lanka Telecom, pioneer telecommunication provider in Sri Lanka, is having an island wide network to provide the telecommunication facilities to its customers. Early days it was a government owned enterprise and prior to that it was a government Department and there was no competition and customers had no option but to obtain services from Department of Telecommunication. With the introduction of the open economy the private sector was allowed to enter into the industry and then the competition began. Government monopoly no longer exists. Efficiency and quality of services attract the customers. Therefore SLT has no other option but compete with its counterparts. To enhance the quality and efficiency it has to go for new technologies and new methods. Manual work has to be translated into automation. But it is sad to note that some simple procedures still continued to operate manually.

The aim of this project is to analyze the current procedures and implement a web based system to minimize the work and paper work which is presently done manually. The system uses the existing intranet network. This is to be introduced to the Teleshop, Billing centers, Regional offices and automatic exchanges. Basically the project is focused on Nugegoda regional area of the Sri Lanka Telecom. There are three master exchanges and fourteen remote exchanges which consist of 67,000 customers.

Proposed project will reduce the manual work, paper work and a quick service can be given to the customers efficiently. Satisfied customers are a wealth to the organization. It could attract new customers and this will bring good brand name to the organization.

An Optimized API for SMS Services (Mobile Medicine Application)

Title: An Optimized API for SMS Services (Mobile Medicine Application)
Authors: Mapatuna, M.D.
Abstract: Short Message Service (SMS) is a service available on most digital mobile phones that permits the sending of short messages which is also known as text messages transferred between mobile phones, other handheld devices and even landline telephones. GSM Short Message Service becomes more and more popular world wide due to its low price, reliability and easiness of processing. It's used for personal communication as well as for business processes. Objective of this project is to develop an API where such SMS Service can be provided in the MS Windows Operating Systems. Most important aspect of this system is, it doesn’t use a subscriber gateway to implement the SMS services.

This product is mainly addressed not for the domestic mobile user community, but when it comes to the commercial aspects, it can be used in several ways. Typical services that handle large number of concurrent SMS requests and responses can use the product effectively.

The main aspect of this product is that it process messages concurrent. This feature is implemented through a Queuing Model. Further more the system enables the users to query a database through a SMS and take the result set back as a SMS. And also it has a feature to send bulk SMS’s through the system mean while it stores all the incoming messages. Finally the design of this application supports configurability up to the maximum by allowing the users to configure the backend and implement the business logic of their own.
