Title: Student Registration and Examination Procedural System Institute of Indigenous Medicine
Authors: Attidiya, P.D.H.
Abstract: This project has been done on behalf of the final individual project, which is a compulsory module
of the third semester of MSc in Compute Science. Initially this project has been designed and
developed as a prototype model for one of a group project held in second semester. That included
some of the screen designs without data capturing and processing functionalities. (Data is directly
setup in the database by execution of SQL scripts). This project is an extended version of above
prototype module as a full functional bespoke package that covers the administration tasks related
to student registration and examination procedures of the Institute of Indigenous Medicine (IIM).

The main objectives of this project is to identifying key issues and drawbacks related to manual
registration and examination activities at the administration department, design & develop a
computer base information system to resolve the above issues by automating administrative
activities at IIM. Implementation of this system would reduce the paper work, improve the overall
productivity and efficiency, make available information on time, provide quick service and
accurate output etc.

The Student Registration & Examination Procedural System has been design and developed
based on the three-tier software architecture by considering Windows 2000 as the main operating
system. Rational Rose 2002 and Microsoft Visio 2002 used as the system designing tools. Front
tier application software and middle tier components has been developed using Microsoft Visual
basic 6.0 enterprise edition. Seagate Crystal Report 8.5 used as the reporting generating tool and
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition used as the database management system.

This project encompasses main activities of the administration department from the registration of
a candidate to graduation of a candidate. In addition to that, system provides various queries and
reports to assist staff to make their decisions correct and effective way. The project dissertation
covers the techniques and methodologies & approaches used in the design and development
process.

Authors: Wijewardana, D.A.
Abstract: Insurance simply means sharing the risk among large number of people in the society at a price. In Sri Lankan context, there is a rapid growing interest about insurance is visible among people not only in Colombo & suburbs but also in remote areas. The major causes may be large number of accidents, increasing complexity of social life and many other reasons. As we are moving fast to digital economic era, every service are started to sell through the Internet.

Online Insurance Agent is evaluating customer needs and help to take an insurance policy from any insurance company in Sri Lanka without human intervention. People can log to this system via Internet and evaluate all types of insurance plans in each and every company and match with their own needs.

There are four parts consist of this system. They are Need Analysis, Quotation system, make an appointment and Customer complaints/comments.

This system will be implemented to the Ceylinco Insurance Company Limited. All requirements are gathering with the help of marketing division and the senior underwriters.
A CD-ROM based e-learning module on Object Oriented Systems Development

Title: A CD-ROM based e-learning module on Object Oriented Systems Development
Authors: Sumanapala, M.S.S.
Abstract: Learning is not a new concept. The way we learn and the speed at which we acquire and needed knowledge are rapidly changing, due to various forces such as globalization, technology and the economy. “E-learning” is the new trend in the world of learning today. E-learning is mainly categorized as “Web based learning” and “Computer based learning” and the materials are delivered via the internet, intranet/extranet, audio or videotape, satellite, TV and CD-ROM.
The main aim of this project is to implement a CD-ROM based e-learning system on the subject module “Object Oriented Systems Development” to provide a guideline to help the students who are following the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) Degree Course at UCSC. This system is targeted for the students in the 3rd semester and covers Part I (Chapter 1 – 9) of the subject module, which is scheduled as a 30 hours lecture series. The 2nd half (Chapter 10-16) will be covered under Part II. The total module is scheduled as a 60 hours lecture series. Main concern of this module is to provide a high degree of user interactivity with full of multimedia facilities. The final product will be an interactive CD, which is full of multimedia options. Compared with the traditional learning methods this system will provide lot more benefits towards the user.
Macromedia Director Shockwave Studio 8.5 authoring environment was used for the implementations and Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Rational Rose 2000, Microsoft Paint, “Roboflash Tolkit 2.0” – a Conversion Software for converting Power Point presentations into Flash movies, “CaptureWizPro – Version 3.00” – a Capturing Software for the purpose of capturing the designing steps of UML diagrams as Video Clips are the other software needed for the development. Finally the system is converted to a “Macromedia Projector” and stored in a compact disk.
At the end of each chapter the user will be able to do a self-assessment on the subject matter using the Quizzes given. Each quiz consists of 5 questions. By answering the Model Question Paper given, the student can check his/her overall knowledge on the module. At the end of each test user will be provided with the marks he/she obtained.
The system was evaluated by the undergraduate students at UCSC and their responses on the system were tremendous. They wish to have such e-learning modules for all of their other learning modules as well.

e-Learning system for Mathematics for Computing I for BIT Semester I

Title: e-Learning system for Mathematics for Computing I for BIT Semester I
Authors: Abeygunawardana, R.A.B.
Abstract: The objective of this project is to developed an e-learning site for Mathematics for Computing I for BIT semester I students. The overall syllabus of this module is covered in this web material. There are seven main topics and several sub topics in this module and these are discussed using simple explanations and graphics. Every sub topic is explained in a 14’ screen sized page and at the end of every page some examples related to that topic are available. In the example page, the solution and some explanations by describing the way to solve this problem are included.

Since this the first mathematics module under the BIT and age and education levels of the students varies widely, simple computational functions are used to explained the mathematical concepts in this material. On the other hand the course coordinator or the Subject Matter Expert (SME) may not be familiar with developing and updating a web site. Therefore, a simple, but powerful tool “Microsoft Front Page” is used to develop web pages.

Students can use this site to learn and the coordinator or the SME can use this site to teach Mathematics for Computing I module for all the BIT semester I students. Finally, both users coordinator and students can share their knowledge through this site. Students also can be used this site to evaluate their knowledge by using Quizzes, Tests and Past Papers available in the site. Tests are available at the end of the each of the main topic while quizzes at the end of the sub sections.

SME need not be expected to develop or update web pages, since a user-friendly tool was used to develop them. Since every main topic is sub divided into several sub topics and these sub topics are described in one page, it is easy to add new pages and examples to any sub topic.

Since, this site does not use much graphics and animations the downloading time is reduced. Therefore, users can use this site for low cost (Telephone charges). And also, due to simple and clear explanations they can understand mathematical concepts very easily. Therefore this site will definitely be very popular and usable.
