Authors: Dewalegama, E.R.
Abstract: Living in a connected world, it is essential that the computers communicate&#xD;
successfully with a disparate variety of devices, without compromising the standards&#xD;
for dealing with data transfer. Application layer communication and messaging&#xD;
protocols play the interesting role in this scenario. They can be used when&#xD;
communication takes place between computers and various types of controllers.&#xD;
The Modbus protocol is an application layer messaging protocol that supports&#xD;
communication between computers and Modbus based devices.&#xD;
In order to communicate with a device, the computer needs an interface. A driver is&#xD;
used as an interface between the computer and the device. The driver decodes and&#xD;
encodes the messages of the two parties involved. Thus, the driver hides the&#xD;
complexity of the protocol from users.&#xD;
The complexity involved in data processing is not provided by the driver. Hence, a&#xD;
SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) approaches the scene at this&#xD;
stage. It is a computer system for gathering and analyzing real time data. The SCADA&#xD;
system can be used to demonstrate the functionality of a driver.&#xD;
Most of the Modbus drivers that are available in the commercial world are customized&#xD;
to a particular device or they have few features to interact with the device. Some of&#xD;
them are too complex for users with less exposure to Modbus protocol.&#xD;
Universal Modbus Driver with Mini SCADA (UMD-MiniSCADA) system resolves&#xD;
these problems and it is compatible across many Modbus devices. UMD-MiniSCADA&#xD;
is a Modbus Driver with a Mini SCADA that supports monitoring and controlling of&#xD;
Modbus based devices. The system provides an easy way for users without having a&#xD;
thorough knowledge of the Modbus protocol. The system was designed taking into&#xD;
consideration all of the above facts.</summary>

Authors: Yapa, Y.P.R.D.
Abstract: Statistical regression analysis is a powerful tool that can be used to model relationships between variables in a statistical data set. Also, regression analysis is a widely used technique in the statistical data analysis. Regression analysis needs an expert knowledge on the subject Statistics. But most of the people, who need regression analysis to be done for their existing data, do not have enough background knowledge on Statistics. Due to this reason, they are required to get an assistantship from a statistician. Even though enough statistical software packages are available for regression analysis, the person who is operating that software is also expected to have knowledge on Statistics for selection of suitable variables, selection of suitable transformations, interpretation of results etc. This is a great disadvantage for most of those people. So far few attempts have been made to automate regression analysis using neural networks (NN). But all of those attempts have been made to get improved regression estimates using neural networks rather than addressing the above problem. This project focuses on how neural networks can be used to automate regression analysis and simplify the regression estimation process.

The primary goal of this project is fitting a statistically significant multiple linear regression model for a given data set. This project introduces a neural network model for multiple linear regression analysis. The proposed neural network architecture is capable of recognizing linearly related covariate (independent) variables or possible transformations for covariate variables that converts non-linear relationships into a linear form with the response variable. Then this NN model will reduce the number of covariates in the proposed regression model by applying principle component analysis. Principle component analysis would also be useful for eliminating multicollinearity of the regression model. Finally the NN model will estimate parameters of the regression model using backpropagation algorithm. This model can be used for multiple linear regression analysis by any person who doesn’t have good statistical background knowledge</summary>

Authors: Vivekananthan, K.
Abstract: The usage of Internet applications has dramatically become popular during the past decade or so. Today Internet is considered to be an integral component in many a field and business. It brings the users spades of benefits in the form of saving time, energy, money etc.

Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) that offers a number of services with the objective of promoting standard and quality practices in the country cannot stay aloof from this world trend. Embracing the advantages of the Internet will no doubt enhance the efficacy and efficiency of the SLSI that would bring more customer satisfaction.

Via this project the library services of the SLSI will be made available through the Internet and this can be considered a forerunner for making other services online in the future. The Library that servers a large cross section of customers has a repository of local, foreign and International Standards. Besides this it provides wide range of books for reference and for borrowing

The scope of the project is to provide basic facilities over the Internet. This is namely searching, reservation, cancellation of reservation, provisional registration, borrowing details etc. Further the web site carries other information and updates. Besides this, specific rights are given for the administrator to control and mange the operations. In the mean time to be realistic with the time frame allocated to this project, it does not address the complex and security sensitive aspects such as online payment, online purchase and online reference. However, it leaves provisions to incorporate such features in future. The system is tested at various stages of the development and evaluated by the probable users. The results reflect well on the outcome.

This project makes use of the dot net framework namely ASP.NET with Visual Basic in view that this technology is among the fast catching up technologies. The database is designed in SQL server since .net framework provides special provisions for SQL server. The analysis and designing is done with Rational Rose tool</summary>

Authors: Wickramaarachchi, D.N.
Abstract: Over the years, the amount of information available electronically and other forms has grown up. Tendency to copy and paste sections of text and present it as original increases. Plagiarism is the presentation of someone else work as one’s own. When students submit the take home assignments, more than one student may have submitted the same work by copying among students or copying the same work someone else has done by more than one student. In the academic environment plagiarism undermines whole teaching system and harms students as well as reputation of the university/institution.

Testing of these various forms of plagiarism overload the duty of the teacher. But it must not take too much staff time or other resources as those can be utilized in an effectively way. The time of academic staff is already at a premium and must be considered best used in the teaching of students than catching those few who may cheating the system. Similarly financial resources are limited and would be best aim at the provision of student facilities.

The aim of this project is to develop a low cost and accurate automated plagiarism detection system in Ms Word documents to address this vastly spreading problem in the academic environment. Statistical Natural Language Processing techniques and other techniques has been applied to detect most common ways of plagiarism. These techniques were implemented using Visual Basic 6.0 and Microsoft Access database was used to facilitate the system. Implemented system has been evaluated to measure the applicability of the system and overall work was evaluated to judge the suitability of the approach used</summary>
