Authors: | Gunawardena, A.L.D.C. |
Issue Date: | 1-Nov-2013 |
Abstract: | This project titled ‘Accessing Databases using SMS’ was a requirement by a USCS academic staff to build a suite of programs which when implemented on a PC will make it to receive database access requests via a Short Message (commonly called SMS), process them and send responses back to the sender via a Short Message. The design of a simple protocol packet structure for sending requests was also one of the terms of reference. The terms of reference as stated by the sponsor warranted studies on the cellular phone technologies with particular reference to Short Message Service (SMS), database servers, connections and access methods, Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), Java application programming using swing API set, Java threading mechanism, Java serial communication, open source development environments, open source DBMS and PC serial communication. This dissertation describes in detail, the functional and non-functional user requirements to be fulfilled by the expected program suite as stated by the sponsor of the project, approach to finding the solution, the design along with the software architecture, implementation, databases and database drivers, database tables, user guide, packaging and installation instructions. |
